On Sunday we travelled by coach to Sutton & Epsom for our first fixture of the year. The girls had been training hard and were more than ready to put it all into practice. First up were the hosts. Hove started strongly with two tries from Keira in the corner. Sutton replied with two of their own, then Sasha scored and Sutton again to go into half time at 3-3. The second half was also very tight with Sasha and Sissy scoring for Hove but Sutton also scored 2 to finish the match 5-5. Sutton & Epsom are a strong side and the girls needed all their attacking and defensive skills to earn this well-deserved draw. There was some great tackling from all the team, including the two new girls Tilly and Rose. Sutton’s defence was solid so the girls needed to be creative in passing and how they ran forward. It was great to see the determination to claim every loose ball as their own.
After a brief break they played Worthing. This was a very different game. Hove had gained a good deal of confidence from the first game and took this game to Worthing from the start – with some force! Again there was great attacking and defensive play from the whole team and 8 of the girls managed to get on the score sheet, with the game finishing 17-6 to Hove.
It was fantastic to see how they all played as a team and supported each other. Our two new players seem to have taken to rugby like ducks to water and the team have warmly welcomed them. Just can’t wait until the next game!
