Hove U13 Girls in first tournament appearance!
Hove made their first full fixture in the U13 Girls Sussex Waterfall Tournament at Worthing RFC
After all the hard work over the summer and into the season by the U13 Girls, as well as a couple of development-style fixtures, Hove entered the Sussex Waterfall Tournament held at Worthing Rugby Club in their first competitive fixtures. The tournament featured Worthing, Horsham and Pulborough, all well established girls sections.
The tournament was a round robin format with 3 games of 10 minute halves.
Hove vs Worthing
Despite only having six players for the tournament (with a loan of 2 from Pulborough for this game and the Horsham game) Hove got off to a great start, taking the lead against Worthing. Some great running from the girls put Hove 3-2 ahead at half time. Some amazing tackling from Kiera helped keep Worthing at bay but some good work from both teams put the scores at 5-5. Hove were a little unlucky to have a player bundled into touch while grounding the ball on the last play of the game, but everyone was happy with a great positive performance.
Final Score - Hove 5 Worthing 5
Hove vs Horsham
Hove started off quite strongly and pounced on some Horsham disorganisation to get a couple of tries in. Horsham responded well, tightening up their defence and they started to pile on the pressure. Some great bits of play by Hove but a strong Horsham defence stopped several try scoring opportunities.
Final Score - Hove 4 Horsham 7
Hove vs Pulborough
For the final game, Hove played with 6 against Pulborough (who had a squad of 12 players for the day) meaning that Hove had no substitutes for this game. Pulborough took the lead early on and raced to a 5-2 lead. Hove, as a team, had been growing as players all day and all of the players looked dangerous with the ball in hand. Some amazing running and a spirited fightback led to Hove pulling back the scoreline to 8-7 with just a couple of minutes to go. Some amazing defensive work (Pulborough had to play around 12 phases at one point) including proficient tackling by Saige and Kiera and a monster hit by Evie to force the turnover. Hove played the ball through their hands, getting it out wide and pulling back a last minute equaliser. Not content to sit back at this point, Hove went looking for further points, but it wasn't to be and the game ended 8-8.
Final Score Hove 8 Pulborough 8
Overall it was a great day for girls rugby at Hove - our first tournament (and first real fixtures) and a great performance all round. Especially pleasing was the way the girls improved, both as a team and individually, over the course of the day. There's no substitute for playing full games and all of the players benefitted from the experience. Everyone enjoyed themselves and the girls played with an awesome team spirit all through the day.
