Sussex Cup 5th November
Sunday 5th November - Sussex Cup U18.
A combined Hove and Worthing U18's team played Uckfield and Pulborough at Uckfield in the Sussex Cup.
Hove & Worthing played Uckfield in the opening fixture which was a highly entertaining but hard fought encounter. The Hove/Worthing girls scored first with with some quick hands after some really good work in the middle of the park and took the lead 5-0. Both teams had some good passages of play and only some excellent defense kept the our girls in the lead until a couple of minutes before half time, when Uckfield intercepted the ball and scored a breakaway try. A successful conversion gave the home team a 7-5 lead at half-time. Uckfield started the second half strongly and quickly scored again giving them a 12-5 lead. The Hove/Worthing girls were quick to rally and pushed forward scoring again after some excellent play, bringing them to within 2 points of the home team. With 10 minutes to go Hove/Worthing pressed hard looking for the win, going close on a couple of occassions, but Uckfield just about managed to see out the game with a final score or 12-10. A big well done to both teams, some excellent rugby played in the best possible spirit.
After a short 15 minute break Hove/Worthing played their second game against Pulborough who got off to a flying start scoring 4 tries in quick succession, taking an early lead. The Hove/Worthing girls dustes themselves off and began to get themselves back into game with some some fierce tackling and put the opposition under some good pressure stemming the early flood. Pulborough did managed to score another couple of tries and finished the first half with a commanding lead on the scoreboard. The second half kicked off and the Hove/Worthing girls started to apply some real pressure to the Pulborough attack and scrum, making them look ordinary at times. Pulborough did manage to break through the Hove/Worthing defence on several occasions with some very good play as you would expect from an established team and finished the game with a comfortable victory according to the scoreboard. What the scoreboard does not relect is just how much our girls grew into this game, especially in the second half. The Hove/Worthing team should take a lot of confidence from this game, particularly in the commitment they bought in the second half, that made it a real competition. The attitude and step up in intensity were excellent, as was the belief and change of mindset that grew the longer the game went on. Lets take that belief with us in every game ladies and look forward to the next round. Congratulations to Hove/Worthing, Uckfield and Pulborough all of whom played very Well, but the overall winner on a stunning November afternoon has to girls rugby. Well done girls.
